Insulated concrete forms (ICFs)

Insulated concrete forms (also known as insulating concrete forms, or ICFs) are formwork, or moulds, for reinforced concrete that are designed with built-in thermal insulation.

These moulds are stackable and interlocking, which permits them to be fitted with reinforced steel bars in order to maximize flexural strength when filled with concrete.

The ICF construction technique creates structures with unparalleled strength and durability. The method was developed in the 1960s and is now among the preferential building processes for all categories of projects.

ICFs are well suited for Vancouver Island construction projects – from low rise commercial to residential – in that they dramatically boost energy efficiency, reduce environmental footprints and increase structural durability and earthquake resistance.

Benefits of ICF construction

Insulated concrete form construction delivers a wide range of advantages:

  • Strength: ICF construction provides increased durability, resistance to earthquakes and the wear-and-tear of natural elements and is up to 10 times stronger than other common building techniques.
  • Energy efficiency: ICF construction offers reduced air leakage and increased thermal resistance, providing continuous insulation that can effectively reduce energy costs by as much as 50%.
  • Safety and comfort: ICF construction provides natural and non-toxic protection against fires and household pests. It also delivers humidity resistance to deter mould growth and boost air quality, and is an effective barrier against both sound and drafts.
  • Eco-friendly: ICF construction maximizes energy efficiency and minimizes the carbon footprint of construction projects.
