Committed to the Environment

Concrete - An Environmentally-Friendly Building Material

Each day consumers grow more concerned about our environment and actively seek ways to minimize their environmental footprint, often making purchase decisions on how their actions will affect our environment, both locally and abroad.

The main ingredients of concrete are two of the most readily-available materials in any region of the planet. While the extraction and processing of these and other ingredients do require the consumption of energy, the total embodied energy required to do so, as well as the carbon dioxide created is less than other building materials. And as concrete is recyclable, it will never end up in a landfill. Even the completed excavation site can be repurposed into wonderful landscapes, look at Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam or Butchart Gardens in Victoria.

Cumberland Ready Mix is committed to protecting our environment.

We undergo voluntary environmental audits and are consistently found to be in full compliance with the BC Environment Management Act (EMA). But we don’t want to just comply with environmental standards.

That’s why we choose to use eco-friendly cement supplements to enhance the strength and workability of our concrete products. At Cumberland Ready Mix, we use:

  • NewCem®: A combination of slag (a waste product of steel mills), fly-ash (a waste product of coal burning plants) and lime kiln dust (a byproduct of the lime processing industry), NewCem® can replace between 10% and 50% of cement content while increasing strength, durability, workability and impermeability. Learn more about NewCem® on the Lafarge website.

Concrete: Your eco-friendly building solution

We’re proud to supply Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland construction projects with one of greenest building materials available.

Did you know?

  • Concrete lasts a lifetime. The Appian Way (Via Appia), the world’s first major concrete roadway, was built to connect the Roman Empire in 312 BC and still exists today!
  • Concrete is 100% recyclable. Discarded concrete is returned to gravel pits, crushed up and reused. There’s no need for it to ever be buried or dumped in a landfill. Ever.
